“A Brave and Startling Truth”

“We must confess that we are the possible…. We are the miraculous, the true wonders of this world.” - Dr. Maya Angelou on the tribute to the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.

Dr. Maya Angelou, the legendary author, poet, and activist held an important role in the American Civil Rights Movement. Her first publication “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” tells her personal story that is notorious for its rich, diverse perspective as a woman who grew up during the Jim Crow era. Previously a banned book, the autobiography consists of heavy themes of assault and racism. It is told through the lens of a girl growing up who faced many trials and tribulations, but joyful moments as well. Writing from a unique perspective that showcases how such realities as racism and sexism affect the youth, her courageous and remarkable writing easily became a captivating classic. Maya has also written pieces about loneliness, togetherness, sexism, racism, and more.

“The desire to reach for the stars is ambitious. The desire to reach hearts is wise.”

Angelou was an active member of the Civil Rights movement whose actions transformed the movement greatly. She was the Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1959. She voiced the need for anti-colonial movements in Africa, as the only woman in the Arab Observer magazine. She worked with several other notable figures in the American Civil rights movement, organizing fundraising initiatives, raising resources for civil rights movements, and marching in rallies. Returning to America after residing in Ghana, she developed the Organization of African American Unity with Malcolm X. She also lobbied legislators to vouch for marriage equality. A progressive, brilliant woman, Angelou called for equitable resources for all people in order to support marginalized and poor communities. She was a vital organizer of the Civil Rights movement whose resourcefulness impacted the historical movement that changed the lives of many. A figure for action, change, and artistry, Maya Angelou is a respected woman in history whose influence impacts many people today.

“The best part of life is not just surviving, but thriving with passion and compassion and humor and style and generosity and kindness.”
